A Complete Guide for Parents

Introduction: The Importance of Baby Teeth

Dear Parents,

The arrival of your baby’s first tooth is an important milestone that deserves all your attention! Many people believe that because they are temporary, baby teeth do not require special care. This is a big mistake that can compromise your child’s oral health for a lifetime.

Baby teeth not only help with chewing and speech development but also maintain space for permanent teeth and contribute to the proper development of the child’s facial structure. Problems with baby teeth can lead to difficulties in the permanent dentition, affecting your child’s self-esteem and overall health.

At Dr. Bee Pediatric Dentistry, our specialized pediatric dentistry team understands that every smile is unique and deserves personalized care from the start. We are here to accompany you and your little one on this very special journey!

Common signs that the teeth are coming in:

  • Irritability and frequent crying
  • Swollen or reddened gums
  • Excessive drooling
  • Tendency to bite objects
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Loss of appetite
  • Reddened cheeks
  • Slight increase in body temperature (mild fever)

Dr. Bee Tip: Not all babies show all symptoms. Each child reacts differently to the emergence of teeth. If you notice anything unusual, schedule a preventive checkup!

When to Worry about Delayed Tooth Eruption

It is important to remember that every child develops at their own pace. However, there are situations that require special attention:

  • If no tooth has appeared by 12 months of age
  •  If there are large gaps between the eruption of one tooth and another
  •  If the teeth have unusual shapes or spots
  • If the eruption sequence is significantly different from the expected pattern

The absence of teeth by 1 year of age may be related to genetic factors, nutrition, or even medical conditions that need evaluation. If in doubt, do not hesitate to consult our specialists at Dr. Bee for a personalized and reassuring assessment.

Remember: Early diagnosis is crucial to prevent future problems. Our team is prepared to detect and treat any changes in your child’s oral development.

How to Relieve the Discomfort of Teething

The eruption of teeth can be uncomfortable for the baby and challenging for parents. Check out our tips to ease the symptoms:

Chilled Teethers: Offer silicone teethers previously cooled in the refrigerator (never in the freezer).

Gum Massage: With clean hands, gently massage the baby’s gums with your fingertips or a gauze moistened with cool filtered water.

Cold Foods: For babies already eating solid foods, offer cold fruits like banana or apple (always supervise to prevent choking).

Cold Compress: Gently apply a cold compress to the face, in the area of the affected gum.

Medication: In cases of intense discomfort, consult the pediatrician or our pediatric dentists about the appropriate use of pain relievers specifically for babies.

Attention: Avoid using anesthetic gels without medical prescription, as there is no scientific evidence of their effectiveness and they may pose risks to the baby’s health.

At Dr. Bee Pediatric Dentistry, for instance, we offer personalized guidance for each stage of your child’s oral development.

Infant Brushing: How and When to Start

Oral hygiene should begin even before the teeth emerge:

0-6 months (no teeth): Gently clean the gums with gauze or a clean cloth moistened with filtered water after feedings.

First teeth: As soon as the first tooth appears, start brushing with a baby toothbrush featuring ultra-soft bristles and a small head.

Proper technique:

  1. Use a minimal amount of fluoride toothpaste (equivalent to a grain of rice)
  2. Brush all surfaces of the teeth using gentle, circular motions
  3. Gently brush the tongue to remove residue
  4. Brush at least twice a day, especially before bedtime

Important Tip: Children do not have sufficient motor coordination to brush their teeth independently until around 7-8 years old. Parents should assist or supervise brushing.

Choosing the Ideal Toothbrush and Toothpaste

Choosing the right products makes all the difference for your little one’s oral health:

Toothbrushes:

  • Opt for brushes with a small, rounded head
  • Ultra-soft bristles with rounded tips
  • An ergonomic, non-slip handle
  •  Replace the brush every 3 months or when bristles become worn

Toothpaste:

  •  For babies and children up to 3 years old: use toothpaste with 1000 ppm of fluoride, in an amount the size of a grain of rice
  • For children aged 3 to 6: use toothpaste with 1350-1500 ppm of fluoride, in an amount the size of a small pea
  • Avoid toothpastes with strong dyes and flavorings

Healthy Nutrition for Strong Teeth

Diet has a direct impact on your child’s oral health:

Recommended Foods:

  • Crunchy fruits and vegetables (apples, carrots) that stimulate saliva production
  • Sugar-free cheeses and yogurts, rich in calcium
  • Water as the main drink throughout the day

Foods to Limit:

  • Sticky foods (candy, gum, dried fruits)
  • Sugary drinks (soft drinks, industrialized juices)
  • Refined carbohydrates (cookies, cream-filled biscuits)

Special Attention:

  • Avoid adding sugar to milk, teas, or juices
  • Do not sweeten the pacifier with honey or other sweeteners
  • Limit consumption of processed foods high in hidden sugars

Dental Visits: When and Why to Start

The first dental visit should occur when the first tooth erupts or, at the latest, by the baby’s first birthday. Starting early has countless advantages:

Benefits of Early Visits:

  • Familiarizing the child with the dental environment
  • Personalized guidance for parents on specific care
  • Early identification of possible issues
  • Prevention of future problems
  • Long-term financial savings

At Dr. Bee, we create a welcoming, playful environment so that the dental experience is positive from the very first visit. Our offices are designed to delight little ones, staffed by professionals specialized in behavior management techniques.

What to Do in Case of a Fall or Fracture of a Baby Tooth

Accidents happen, especially when children are learning to walk. Here’s what to do:

In case of trauma:

  1. Stay Calm
  2. Gently rinse the area with water
  3. Apply a cold compress if there is swelling
  4. Seek immediate dental care

If the tooth breaks:

  • Save the fragment in milk or saline solution
  • Take the child to the dentist as soon as possible

If the tooth is displaced:

  • Do not attempt to reposition it
  • Seek emergency care

Dr. Bee Emergency: We offer priority care in cases of dental trauma.
